In March 2007, Dubai unveiled its plans to build the Meydan Horse Racing Complex to the world. The project took thirty-four months to complete, and on 28 January 2010 the complex opened its doors to the public and racing community. The inaugural day kicked off with breathtaking live horse racing action. If the first day of racing was anything to go by, the Meydan Horse Racing Complex in Dubai will become one of the world’s major racing venues.

The new year brings new hope for the future of Girl Power with the birth of almost Triple Crown winner Big Brown’s first foal. As evidenced by this past Monday’s Eclipse Awards, the 2009 Thoroughbred racing season was dominated by girls, Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta, who showed their heels to the boys in victories that cemented them as living legends. Yet the best may still be to come. And it may come sooner than the birth of Rachel Alexandra “the Great’s” daughter or Zenyatta’s first Mondatta.

Who knows what’s going to happen at Santa Anita Park on Saturday.  Park officials expect to run live races on Saturday but the rains may have damaged the turf track and the Pro-Ride surface so badly that even if live races are run, owners and trainers will be hesitant to keep their horses in the races.
That’s one of the reasons that I’m turning to Gulfstream Park for my…

Thousands of horse racing enthusiasts visit their favorite tracks and watch their selected horses face-off against other worthy competitors. They marvel at the victories and are disappointed with the losses. However, many may never know how much work and dedication it has taken for a horse to reach that point. In the horse racing industry the scales are delicately balanced and can tip either way, with some horses becoming stars while others are forgotten before they have even made a name for themselves. Trainers, owners and jockeys eagerly share their stories and opinions with the media and fans. While they bask in the glory, the horses that make their careers possible stand in their stables and wait patiently till they are needed, not able to share their point-of-view.

As long as the rains keep coming down in Southern California, Santa Anita is going to be an iffy track on which to wager. The reason is simple. Small fields, and there’s nothing like a torrential downpour to ensure a small field, lead to awful payouts.
I’m all about overlays, horses that are going off at higher odds than expected, when I gamble at the racetrack.

I saw my first Holy Bull Stakes when it was called the Preview Stakes in the early 1990s. I especially remember the ’94 renewal when Go for Gin defeated Halo’s Image and ran the fastest time for 14 of the races staged at 1 1/16 miles – 1:41 3/5.
Holy Bull swallowed his palate and finished off the board.

Speed will be king at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, with five stakes races worth a total of $475,000 on the card in the inaugural running of the Gulfstream Sprint Showcase.
Four of the races are on the main track, with the Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint Stakes the lone stake carded for the turf course, which will be contested at five furlongs.

Sometimes a horseplayer can take a look at a race and something jumps out at him. It could be the trainer, jockey, or a specific work. It could be anything.
When that happens, there is only one thing for that horseplayer to do. That would be to put money on the horse to win but often times the horse that jumps out to you will be going off as the favorite.

It’s a time tested fact that stories of strong determination to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds holds a special appeal to the general public. Such is the dramatic tale of Mariah’s Storm, the inspiration behind the 2005 film ‘Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story’. Mariah’s Storm was born in 1991 on Crescent Farm in Kentucky, owned by Donald T. Johnson. As the daughter of Rahy and Dreaming of Anna, Mariah’s Storm had bright prospects ahead of her in the world of horseracing, but her promising racing career almost came to a premature end.

It was difficult for me to pick what I thought was the best racehorse this past decade because by its very nature horse racing is a sport that rewards non-competitiveness.  Often times, a terrific horse like both Street Sense and Hard Spun in 2007 are retired to stud all too early.
Their greatness is never tested on the racetrack.  That’s not true for the #1 horse on my…
