The Santa Anita Racecourse was opened in the year 1934, and the very next year the Santa Anita Handicap was inaugurated. It has remained a very popular horse racing event for horses that are four years old and older, and is held annually by the Santa Anita Racecourse in the month of March. Run over a distance of ten furlongs, the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap offers a purse amount of$750 000, of which Misremembered took home his fair share for his breathtaking victory.

Rains are expected to hit SoCal yet again this weekend. That’s a bummer because the Grade I Frank E. Kilroe Mile over the turf is usually one of the best races to bet for horseplayers during the entire Santa Anita meet.
In any case, it’s our duty as horseplayers to put forth a solid effort and actually try to make some mullah off of Santa Anita’s Saturday card.

One of Santa Anita’s biggest days is this Saturday when 4 year olds and older take to the Pro-Ride surface for the Grade I Santa Anita Handicap. Among the horses that have won the ‘Big Cap have been Seabiscuit, Free House, Tiznow and the greatest claimer of all time, Lava Man.
The brilliant Zenyatta won’t be showing up to take on the boys in the ‘Big Cap but another top…

Over the last two years the horse racing industry has been suffering under the economic crisis that has been felt across the USA. Auctions have especially been taking strain, with horses being sold for decreased prices and some owners not selling all their horses. On Tuesday, 2 March 2010, Fasig-Tipton held their Two Year Olds in Training sale in the Miami Gardens at the Calder Race Course and Casino in Florida, which turned out to be a very interesting sale, and hopefully a sign of things to come.

Santa Anita will continue with their lucky sunshine only policy this week on Thursday. That’s good news for horseplayers who should be able to find an overlay or two or three in Race 7 on Santa Anita’s Thursday card.
The race, an optional claiming $80,000 at 1 1/16th miles over the Pro-Ride surface, will showcase some up and coming fillies in Southern California.

The weekend is fast approaching, with several interesting Derby preps on the menu for Saturday.
The $150,000 Sham Stakes, originally carded to go last Saturday, is the feature at Santa Anita, weather permitting. There is rain the forecast and two of the last three Saturday cards were washed out by the lack of proper drainage on the Pro Ride surface.
The $250,000 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct drew a…

The rains that hit Santa Anita this past Saturday put a damper on what would have otherwise been a great day of racing.
No such rains are expected on Wednesday. Santa Anita resumes a full 8 race card on Wednesday. The best horse betting race, from my point-of-view, looks to be the 6th where 3 year olds will attempt a mile over the Pro-Ride surface.

Since 1924, horses aged five years and older have been participating in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, trying to capture this prestigious title. It is one of the most challenging and popular events on the jumps racing calendar, hosted by the Cheltenham Racecourse, and forms part of the Cheltenham Festival. This year the Cheltenham Gold Cup will be taking place on 19 March 2010, and trainer Paul Nicholls has already chosen an extraordinary team to participate in the festival. One of the names that stands out amongst his selection is previous Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Denman.

When visiting the Santa Anita Paddock Gardens visitors will find two breathtaking sculptures. One is of George Woolf, and the other is of his most treasured ride, Seabiscuit. This well known jockey was inaugurated into the Hall of Fame of Horse Racing, and after his death the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award was created in his memory. This award, inaugurated in 1950, honors the achievements and contributions made by present day jockeys. It is seen as a prestigious award to receive and was won this year by jockey Calvin Borel.

It’s the dead of winter in New York, and often a Wednesday card run over the inner track can lead some horseplayers (myself included) to doze off for a quick nap.
That won’t be the case today.
The nine race card on tap this afternoon is chock full of live longshots and vulnerable favorites, which should lead to some handsome payoffs, and we would like to be on board.

Ten Florida Derby winners during the past 54 years have won the Kentucky Derby. The first was Nashua in 1955 and the last was Big Brown in ’08.
But nary a 3-year-old who triumphed in Gulfstream Park’s premier stakes race, scheduled for March 20, captured the Triple Crown. In ’56, Needles came the closet.

A small but interesting field will line up to contest Santa Anita’s 7th race on Wednesday. Sometimes, horseplayers can find a horse to bet in a small field because the public is likely to jump onto the favorite.
That’s probably what’s going to happen with the chalk in Race 7 at Santa Anita on Wednesday, Alpha Kitten. Alpha Kitten is listed at 9 to 5 on the morning line. Does…

The horse racing community has recently taken a little time out, to fondly remember one of their members who passed away on 14 February 2010. Not only was Dick Francis a celebrated crime writer, but before his career as an author began to take shape, Francis enjoyed a successful career as a jockey for nine years. Drawing from his experiences as a jockey, and by regularly attending live horse racing events after his retirement, he was able to keep his readers spellbound through his page turning plots and attention to detail.

The La Canada Stakes was inaugurated in 1975, and is an event that is hosted by the Santa Anita Racecourse every February. Held for mares and fillies that are four years of age, the La Canada Stakes race is a Grade II event. It forms part of the La Canada Series, of which the other two races are the El Encino Stakes and the La Barea Stakes. Winning all three races seems to be an achievement that is not easily come by, as only three fillies have been able to take the title since the inception of the series, namely Got Koko in 2003, Mitterand in 1985 and Taisez Vouz in 1978.
